14th January 2020

People living in the Boston area can kick start the year and support their healthy habits with a free wellbeing event, taking place on 17 January 2020 at the Boston Salvation Army. The event has been organised by Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT) and it will promote looking after mental and physical health.

The beginning of the year is the time when many people make resolutions relating to taking up physical activity or improving their health. The Think Active Boston event will support people to think creatively about their wellbeing and offer alternative activities such as singing, games, crafts, walking and mindfulness that support health but are not associated with the gym or working out.

During the day there will be taster sessions from the Music Man Project – an award-winning music education service which helps build confidence, self-esteem and emotional expression for children and adults with learning disabilities. There will also be an opportunity to sing your heart out in a session led by The Salvation Army. The “Singing by Heart” project was launched for people with dementia and it uses a mix of popular hymns and songs which bring back memories and help connect with other people.

Local services including LPFT’s community mental health and learning disability teams, steps2change talking therapies and the Samaritans will be on hand and available to talk to anyone who would like to learn more about how to look after their mental health and emotional wellbeing, or is concerned about a loved one. Organisations and groups such as Age UK, JAM Cards, Parkrun, Health Walks and Lincs4U will be holding stands advertising what’s available in the Boston area.

Celia Ellis, Behaviour Support Worker, LPFT, who came up with the idea for the event said: “January can be quite daunting for many people, with the pressure of New Year resolutions hanging over their head and the light wallet caused by Christmas expenses.

“With Think Active Boston we wanted to show people that looking after themselves doesn’t have to cost money or involve going to the gym, and there are a lot of activities available to support our wellbeing from both a physical and emotional perspective.

“I’d encourage anyone to drop in and have a look at the stalls and displays, take part in taster sessions or simply get a cuppa and talk to healthcare professionals that will be there on the day.”

Think Active Boston is a free drop-in event taking place on 17 January 2020, 11am-4pm at The Salvation Army, 59-61 High St, Boston PE21 8ST. No booking required. Free refreshments will be available.
