Counter Fraud

The NHS strategy aims to

• Reduce fraud and corruption to an absolute minimum
• Permanently limit the incidence of fraud at this minimum level.

Counter fraud can be committed by patients, managers and staff, professionals, contractors and suppliers.

Benefits of the Counter Fraud Service

1. Since 1999 £60m has been recovered because of counter fraud work
2. In 2008/09 the value of discovered fraud was £19m
3. In 2008/09 £5m was recovered
4. In 2008/09 there were 221 successful prosecutions and 561 civil and disciplinary sanctions applied
5. The NHS Counter Fraud Service maintains a 96% successful prosecution rate
